Sent out on Rehab Assignment to AA Pensacola: Devin Mesoraco
---Fielders are limited to 20 day assignments (barring he doesn't re-injure himself), so he SHOULD be back by the end of the month. The plan is for Mesoraco to work up to back to back 9 inning games behind the plate in Louisville.
Transferred from MLB Cincinnati 10-Day DL to 60-Day DL: RHSP Anthony DeSclafani
---DeSclafani was already expected to miss some time early in the season following last month’s diagnosis of a sprained ulnar collateral ligament. Moving him to the 60-day disabled list, though, means he won’t be toeing the rubber for the Reds until at least June, as DeSclafani’s placement on the disabled list came on April 2.
Claimed off Waivers & Optioned to AAA Louisville: OF Tyler Goeddel (from PHI)
---The 2016 season was a struggle for the 24 year old Goeddel, though that was perhaps to be expected after skipping the Triple-A level entirely as a Rule 5 selection back in 2015 and playing in the majors at the ripe age of 23. Goeddel batted .279/.350/.433 in Double-A in 2015 but logged an anemic .192/.258/.291 batting line across 234 plate appearances in his big league debut last season. The former 1st round draft pick still has 3 option years.
The Reds currently have about 30 players in Extended Spring Training. Most of them are injured and will begin the year on their subsequent milb team's DL. I'll wait a week or so, see if any of them get assigned and then post the 2017 Register.
Released: RHRP Stephen Johnson, LHRP Nolan Becker, C Shawn Zarraga, OF Jeff Gelalich
---Zarraga was signed by the Reds this past offseason as insurance, if his career is over (unlikely) he can relish in the fact that he has 1 day of major league service from last season with the Dodgers.
---Johnson was acquired via the Giants for Marlon Byrd, he pitched last year for AAA and has yet to make his mlb debut.
---Becker was drafted in the 11th round by the Reds in 2012, he pitched in 134 games as a reliever since - never advancing past high A.
---Gelalich was drafted in the 1st round by the Reds in 2012, he hit .245 - .330 - .341 in nearly 1,800 minor league plate appearances. The 26 year old from UCLA never made it above AA.
Purchased from AAA Louisville: RHSP Bronson Arroyo
---The 40 year old hadn't pitched in a major league game since June 15th of 2014.
Outrighted to AAA Louisville off Cincinnati 40 Man Roster: OF Tyler Goeddel
Sent out on Rehab Assignment to AA Pensacola: RHRP Austin Brice
Recalled to MLB Cincinnati from AAA Louisville: OF Jesse Winker
---Winker, 23 years of age, will look to make his major league debut - the 5th Reds player to do that thus far this season. Winker was ranked by BaseballAmerica as a top 100 prospect following the 2014 and 2015 seasons, this past winter he was an honorable mention on that list - just missing. If he spends the entire rest of the season with the big league squad (or on it's DL) he'll fall 1 day shy of a full season of major league service.
Optioned to AAA Louisville: RHRP Barrett Astin
---Astin was allowed to be recalled prior to the "required 10 days assignment" due to Rookie Davis' injury. He played last season at AA, so he could use some seasoning at the AAA level, irregardless of the option - he should see plenty of action with the Reds this season.
Reinstated from MLB Cincinnati 10-Day DL & Optioned to AA Pensacola: RHRP Austin Brice
---Brice, soon to be 25, struggled last year in his first showing with the Marlins after spending just 1 day in AAA.
Released: RHRP Carlos Portuondo
---The 29 year old Cuban pitched just 1 game for AA Pensacola prior to his kick to the curb. He was acquired by the Reds in exchange for Brandon Phillips this past winter.
Signed for 2017 and Assigned to AAA Louisville: RHSP Asher Wojciechowski
---The Toronto Blue Jays selected the 28 year old Wojciechowski in the first round, with the 41st overall selection, of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft. He received an $815,000 signing bonus. They later traded him, along with Ben Francisco, Francisco Cordero, David Rollins, Joe Musgrove, and Carlos Pérez to the Houston Astros on July 20, 2012, in exchange for J. A. Happ, Brandon Lyon, and David Carpenter.
Wojciechowski began the 2015 season in the Astros' starting rotation. He made 5 appearances for the Astros in the 2015 season, 3 of which were starts, and pitched to a 0–1 record, 7.16 ERA, and 16 strikeouts in 16 1⁄3 innings. He was designated for assignment on May 17, 2016 and claimed off waivers by the Marlins. He signed a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks this past December but was released in late March. He's burned through all 3 of his option years, so if he's ever purchased he won't be able to be optioned.
Placed on AAA Louisville 7-Day DL: RHSP Rob Wooten, IF Tony Renda, IF Zach Vincej
Activated from AAA Louisville 7-Day DL: UT Hernan Iribarren
Placed on MLB Cincinnati 10-Day DL: LHRP Tony Cingrani (strained oblique)
Recalled to MLB Cincinnati from AAA Louisville: OF Phil Ervin
---He's in line to be the 7th Reds player to make his debut this season, the next closest team has had 3 debuts this season (CHW, COL, SDP). His roster spot will more than likely go to Mesoraco on Wednesday. The 27th overall selection in the 2013 Draft, Ervin was batting .286/.352/.531 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 14 games for Louisville.
Promoted to AAA Louisville from A Dayton: SS Josciel Veras
---He takes Ervin's roster spot, but will be on the bench, and will be sent back down upon Ervin's upcoming optional assignment.
Reinstated to AAA Louisville from 7-Day DL: RHRP Nick Christiani
Reinstated to A Dayton from 7-Day DL: SS Luis Gonzalez
Recalled to MLB Cincinnati from AA Pensacola: RHRP Ariel Hernandez
---The Reds were in need of fresh arms after Saturday's debacle, and the other options on the 40 man roster had pitched recently. Hernandez was at big league camp in Spring Training, and in seven appearances for Pensacola he was 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA, four hits, four walks and 14 strikeouts over eight innings. Those 8 innings are the only innings he has above A ball.
Price didn't expect Hernandez to have a long stay, especially as the club tries to figure out who will come out of the rotation once Rookie Davis comes off the disabled list.
Optioned to AAA Louisville: RHSP Lisalverto Bonilla
