If you are paying attention to the AFL then you know he's hitting extremely well. He's arguably the best defensive player we have in the minors. So is it now a foregone conclusion that he will be protected in the Rule 5 draft? Realistically how much should he rise in the prospect rankings or is this too small of a sample size to be taking notice?

I'm going to say sample size. He really hasn't hit in the minors. At best looks like a glove first bench player

I think Vincej WILL be protected from the rule 5 draft. I think part of sending him to the AFL was to help them make that determination - a determination they'll have to make on several of his AFL teammates too - but the info generated seems fairly decisive to me. Like, if a great AFL trip wasn't getting him a 40 man roster spot anyway, why send him?
I doubt they sent him with the intention of proving how much he sucks or making it more tempting for another team to select him in the rule 5 draft.
That said, I agree that it's a matter of small sample size, it's not like he's become a top prospect or key asset for the organization... but with his defense (minor league Gold Glove as best defensive shortstop in all of minor league baseball) he seems like a guy a team might gamble a Rule 5 pick on. I see him as possibly competing for DeJesus' job as backup infielder before long, if he starts off well in AAA.

So has it all ready been announced he will start in AAA or that's just the next logical move for him?

He's org filler - like Somsen and Selsky - he has to keep roving himself.

I don't think assignments for much of anyone has already been announced, at this point it's just a matter of making educated guesses. Vincej is 25 and spent the past two seasons in AA. It's now or never to move above AA. If they don't think he's deserving of a promotion to AAA after two seasons they definitely wouldn't deem him deserving of a 40 man roster spot. So, next logical move. I don't know, maybe his AFL stint was just to decide whether to stick with him at all, rather than decide whether or not to risk losing him to the rule 5 draft. Either way, his AFL performance has at least justified a promotion to AAA, if not to the 40 man roster.

It is just a sample size, but during his time in the minors he has always had a high OBP. So he knows the strike zone. In fact he OBP of .329 with the Wahoos was his lowest in his career. He is swinging at more pitches and beginning to hit with authority, With some players power is the last skill to develop. I don't think the Reds keep him off the 40 man roster. He might be traded like Justin Turner was though.

Zack is now leading the Arizona League in BA, HR, OBP, and OPS.
Alejandro chacin is also having a nice little time in his fall league.

I (now, after he won that Minor League Gold Glove) think of Vincej as a slick-fielding glove-first shortstop, where any offensive success is merely a bonus. His success in the AFL is a pleasant surprise, but it probably means even more for him than someone, like, say, teammate and corner outfielder Tyler O'Neill, who's value comes almost entirely from his bat, since Vincej's bat is regarded as the weakness keeping him from the majors.
With Ivan DeJesus DFA'd and likely headed to free agency Vincej is a step closer to being the Reds' backup SS.

He may win the triple crown in the AFL. He may be the MVP.

He's filler and if Cozart isn't moved he'll probably be back in AA again.

I really don't see him making it through the rule 5 draft. Too many teams need infielders.
