Damn, I really thought Dayton was going to rally for a big finish.
Did they have the worst record in all of the minor leagues? How could anybody be worse?

The Dragons sure weren't given a lot to work with this year. Shed Long played 94 games there, Senzel 58, Okey 42. Long and Senzel were the only guys to hit over .250.
The starters weren't too good - Jose Lopez arguably had a good season, but left much to be desired, before being promoted out. Ty Boyles, Tanner Rainey, Jacob Constante, and Austin Orewiler weren't particularly good, with Rainey and Constante eventually being moved to the bullpen. Tony Santillian had a 6.82 ERA in 8 starts after his promotion. The bullpen got some big upgrades after the draft in Hendrix and Benenati.
For most of the year they had between 1-3 top 30 prospects (although Stephenson contributed little and Shed Long has perhaps controversially not qualified for such lists), next year they might have more like 6 just to start the year.
I think they're due for a better year in 2017, with... C Tyler Stephenson (sure to return to Dayton) OF Taylor Trammell OF TJ Friedl 2b/3b Alejo Lopez (21 BB, 19 K, .281 average, .351 OBP in Billings at age 20) C Cassidy Brown (.329/.416 with 20 BB, 30 K in Billings at age 21) LHP Scott Moss (#4 pick by Reds in 2016) RHP Tony Santillan (I think he can do better than he has so far in Dayton... definitely one of the higher upside arms in the system) RHP Ian Kaholoa (pitched pretty well in Billings at age 18)
Several of the other recent draft picks, like 2b John Sansone (and perhaps Cassidy Brown), might not be very high ceiling prospects, but you'd hope they'd be able to make positive contributions in low A ball next year.

Only half that league makes the playoffs - odds were against them from the get go...lol. Brevard County was the only worse full season club (40 - 97).

Santillan's performance at Dayton this year was encouraging, imo. He only had 7 starts and was lousy in 4 of them, but he was only 19 and he was excellent in the other 3. In 2 of them (including the last start), he gave up 0 ER, 4 hits, 4 BBs and 20 Ks in 12.2 innings. It was pretty straight forward with him. When he walked guys in bunches, he got hammered. When he didn't, he dominated.

Overall, we have to be pretty pleased with what he showed this year. Going forward he needs to lower his walk rate though. The 5.2 BB/9 ideally should drop below 4 BB/9 next year, and then closer to or under 3 BB/9 in 2018. If he does that, he'll be one of the better pitching prospects in the minors with his arm talent, if not, then he'll likely be destined for the bullpen if he makes it at all.
