Leake's ERA by the way currently leads the NL. LOL, he's good but not that good. www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/leakemi01.shtmlCareer 3.90 ERA, according to Baseball Reference 2.9 of his career 16.0 WAR has happened in the last 7 weeks. No one ever said he wasn't a good pitcher. What we said is that if we have a chance to get a legitimate ace who can be the frontline starter of a world series contender, then we should take that chance, because odds are we aren't getting one from the international market, and we definitely aren't signing one as a free agent.. Pretty slim that we'd trade for one either.

Jim Callis with a new mock at MLB Pipeline today. He has us taking Hunter Greene after Kyle Wright goes #1, and he seemed pretty confident that we'll take Greene if he's there. Based on a lot of the comments he has with several of the picks, it sounds like he is starting to hear a lot of the pre-draft buzz about what teams are in on what players. m.mlb.com/news/article/232496282/jim-callis-mock-projection-2017-mlb-draft/Based off of this mock, I'd say we'd be looking at a high upside prep bat like Heliot Ramos, Drew Waters, or Mark Vientos at 32. I could also see us taking a flyer on Seth Romero, but maybe not after the Ian Kahaloa incident. I doubt that we'd go with prep pitchers with both of our first two picks, but Blayne Enlow is one with a lot of helium who is still available in this scenario. Hagan Danner is another. I suppose Brent Rooker would be the top college bat available, but there seems to be a wide range of opinion on where he'll land, anywhere from late first to late second round, and I'm not sure where the Reds are on him. Brian Miller, the CF for North Carolina would be another college bat around this range for 32 or 38.

Gore at #3!
Feel good about that. I'm a little disappointed we haven't been connected as I've stated previously, but part of me still wouldn't be shocked if we went with him at #2. It doesn't make sense to me that the Reds aren't connected to him at all. Not even a peep. That's TOO silent for me to not wonder.
Greene Wright Gore
Are my top 3 at this point. Wright passing Gore is more about Wright than Gore. I'd be shocked if Wright wasn't #1 at this point. Too much safety with still considerable upside.

And as I pointed out, the Reds would be absolutely lucky if they can get a Mike Leake ceiling pitcher out of whomever they take #2.

I'm starting to worry it will be Wright #1 and us taking McKay #2. That's the worst scenario to me. I caution you to have some faith in the Reds. Don't worry. They employ a whole scouting department who's giving this decision more thought than any of us, even Duke. What Duke knows they probably know also (heck, they should listen to Duke). As attitudes have shifted about McKay in recent weeks, I'm sure the Reds are aware. I don't think anybody has implied that the Reds are committed to adding McKay - last year they were linked to Kyle Lewis, Corey Ray, and AJ Puk. Early on the Twins admitted to considering Jeren Kendall, but these things are always fluid. With the #2 pick they only need to fully vet the top 2 or 3, if you're worried that they aren't putting enough time or resources into making a smart decision. At the moment it seems that the clear consensus is Wright or Greene. I'm not worried. I'm confident they'll choose one of the options acceptable to me.

If they thought McKay could play LF, then it'd make sense to take McKay as a hitter. Most see him as 1B only though. I do think he's the best bat in the draft, but 1B traditionally have a lower trade value, and we've got Votto for another 7 years. The wildcard could be if the DH is coming and the general public doesn't know it yet. Also, I trust Callis far more than Manuel.

Call it arrogance if you want, but I've worked with scouts and coaches at the MLB level and feel like I knew as much as any of them. I do have faith in the Reds staff, and when I say "worry" I mean worry what I want to happen, won't. I've been wrong. But I've hated McKay since before he lost his velocity. Looks like the league is beginning to agree with my opinion.

2 weeks from today is the first two rounds of the draft. Not too much else to know at this point. Most of the top high school prospects are done, only a handful of college games left. Super regionals are Thursday-Monday, so we'll get at least one more Kyle Wright start.

I still like Smith as the best college hitter. Just looks real good to me. Also a better chance to play in LF than McKay right?
