I am all for Cozart being our starting SS Opening Day 2016.......if Suarez is injured and can't man the position. Cozart is a great defender and will be a great late inning replacement in the field for Suarez. If we need to have a late inning defensive replacement for Suarez at SS, then Suarez is no SS.

All I am saying is if suarez ends up the year at 280 plus he cannot be on the bench starting the 2016 season. Some say suarez is lucky so far, I call cozarts season before the injury extremely lucky. Cozart struggls badly moving runners during his career. Suarez needs to work on his d and is a little cheaper than cozart and cozart will ask for more money during the offseason. You cannot sit a younger guy if he finishes the season strong and crush his confidence going into 2016. He still must remain consistent for the next 2 months which I think he will do.

Suarez does make some good plays, in addition to the mistakes. At this point, he doesn't seem fated to remain a subpar defender...

Lots of variables at play here. Cozart's health and bat vs. Suarez and his D/ability to sustain his production at the plate. I'd like to see how Suarez finishes the season but I'm going Cozart for now.

I just used Dominguez...because terrible. What I disagreed with, was the premise that the Reds need to continually go out and spend 2-4M on relievers and bench players, when there are cost-effective options in the system. Not saying every prospect should be developed on the bench, but I think it would've been smart to keep Suarez up considering he has big league experience and plays the same position as by far the weakest position player in the lineup coming into the season. If anything Suarez's defensive struggles show to me that they were right to keep him playing everyday, where he could work on his fielding. Jerking him back and forth between various positions and benchwarming probably wouldn't help his fielding. Suarez has major league experience from 2014 because he essentially skipped over AAA. He played 12 games at that level before being promoted, which sure seems like rushing him. Suarez having been rushed to the Tigers doesn't mean that was the best thing for him, or that he was fully prepared. Sometimes teams need roster filler to avoid rushing more cost-effective internal options before they're ready.

Cozart should be traded the moment he passes a physical.

Cozart is a great defender and will be a great late inning replacement in the field for Suarez. If we need to have a late inning defensive replacement for Suarez at SS, then Suarez is no SS. Suarez is not atrocious there, and just because Cozart is a tremendous fielder doesn't mean that Suarez is not a SS (besides, I eventually see Suarez maybe moving to 2B when Brandon moves on). I mean he is okay. Plus, I think being on the major league club, working with our infield instructors, and talking to and picking Brandon Phillips brain, he could develop into an above average fielder. I mean I am okay with him in the field. He is no Cozart fielding, but he is also twice the hitter that Cozart is. Suarez looks good at the plate. He looks like he could be a .280 / 15 / 50 RBI type of player. He would make a pretty good #2 hitter finally to put ahead of Votto. Problem is, we still have no lead off hitter to grow with if Hamilton doesn't get his sheet together. Phillips has been doing a serviceable job there, but he is not the answer at lead off for the next 3 to 5 years. If Hamilton could just be a .265 hitter with a .330 OBP, coupled with his steals, he would be pretty dang good. Could almost ink 100 SB a year off that type of production at the plate. We have a young guy I have some interest in, Alex Blandino, but the problem with him appears he is destined to be a 2B also. What would be more advantageous for the Reds? Blandino 2B and Suarez SS, or the other way around? I honestly do not see a long term fit with Cozart here. We need guys that can make contact, get on base, and be a little more consistent. That is the type of hitter we need to keep moving towards.

Here watching the team sign roster-filler to minor league contracts and not complaining about how it represented poor management? I hoped Winker and Stephenson would do well and quickly earn call-ups, but I wasn't angry at the organization that they didn't.

Winker isn't even looking like a sure bet to "earn" a promotion to Louisville at this point. Rushing guys rarely has a positive outcome.

You're right, Winker isn't looking like a sure bet to earn a promotion to Louisville this season, and for that I am surprised. He's gone into a slump lately, after it looked for weeks like he had figured out AA pitching. Personally I hope he gets promoted to Louisville before long, to see how he does there in a short debut. Stephenson, on the other hand, has been pitching so well for weeks now that contractual issues - delaying free agency and salary arbitration - are the best argument as to why he isn't with the Reds today. Some players develop quicker than others, without a matter of being rushed.

If the 2016 lineup has enough offensive pop, then I say Cozart, otherwise Suarez. Suarez needs to work on his defense.
