Regarding Steve Souza, talks about a large deal apparently include multiple teams, some of which have yet to be identified, which seems fairly reassuring. The Reds are always likely to prefer to be an unidentified team in talks, seemingly more than most other teams. Although maybe that's just bias on my part, that I'm always looking for Reds news.
If the Reds don't want something they often say they're not interested.
Can Steven Souza be a starting outfielder, or is he a bench player? Was his .432 OBP in AAA last year an indication of how good he is, or just a sign that he's too advanced for the minors?

per mlb prospect watch: Steven Souza
Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50 It has been a long, slow climb through the Minor Leagues for Souza since the Nationals picked him in the third round in 2007. After several injuries and a 50-game suspension for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs in 2010, he finally put it all together and made his Major League debut in 2014.
Toolsy and athletic, Souza combines good speed with big raw power. His loose, easy swing allows him to drive the ball to all fields. He uses an up the middle-approach that has helped him cut down on his strikeouts and make better use of his power.
Souza has the tools to be a Major League regular. Since moving to the outfield, he has primarily played right field and profiles best there, but is still athletic enough to handle center field in a pinch.

It appears that the Rays will flip some of the Padres prospects to the Nats for Souza.

AJ Prellar is making lots of trades. Didn't his predecessor, Kevin Towers, also make lots of trades, with the intent of reworking the roster? And they all just seemed to turn out badly, getting him fired? I think it's way too soon to know if Prellar's are any more successful. Making lots of moves doesn't guarantee they're going to turn out well, or make the team better. The blockbuster Matt Kemp trade seems heavily dependent on Kemp being healthy, returning to form, and not being harmed by hitting in Petco Park. It's unclear yet what, exactly, will be involved in a Wil Myers trade, and if Myers will do better in Petco than he has in Tampa Bay. I think we'll have to wait and see if the Padres cutting Everth Cabrera was a good idea, but I doubt it was. Kemp seemed to be healthy the 2nd half of the season .309/.365/.609.

Why is this board not questioning WHY the Red's GM was not in on Myers? Oh, why would he do that, he has Schumaker and a RH batter to be named later to man LF. The Red's don't need Myers. My mistake.

This your first time here? The majority of the board is disgusted with just how many guys Jocketty isn't in on. Seeing what the Rays got for Meyers though really does make the return the Royals got look good.

I didn't think the Reds had the appropriate trade chips to pursue Wil Myers, which is why I thought a Reds-Rays trade seemed unlikely. Any Reds trade seems likely to include pitching prospects, not hitting prospects, and the latter is apparently what the Rays wanted.

If only there could have been a third team involved that wanted pitching and had hitting to spare. Someone like Washington.

I'm actually more disappointed in the Reds not going for Steven Souza than Myers to be honest. Myers is coming off an injury and is beginning to show signs of being the second coming of Adam Dunn. Maybe not, but that was a very heavy price tag the Pads gave up for him.
Souza on the other hand could have been a much more reasonably priced acquisition. Michael Saunders would have also been a good gamble.
