---USA TODAY
The deal will send Kemp and catcher Tim Federowicz to San Diego, with the Dodgers receiving catcher Yasmani Grandal, righty Joe Wieland, and a third player, likely pitching prospect Zach Eflin.
The Dodgers will also include around $30MM to help cover the $107MM remaining on Kemp’s contract, which runs through 2019.
*The deal has not yet been finalized — players still need to take physicals, and the deal requires the approval of the commissioner’s office due to the $ being exchanged.

I actually kind of like that deal for the Padres. Kemp obviously can't play great defense anymore and the contract is absurd but he actually had a great year at the plate last year.

I don't understand the deal for SD, is Kemp going to make them that much better? No offensive FA wants to sign there - are they going to trade more pitchers for more controlled offense? If not, what was the point?
For LA I understand it, they had too many outfielders and couldn't trade Crawford or Ethier.

I could see Grandal finding success in LA.
Could be a good move for the SD, but that hangs on if they make any more moves throughout the off-season.

I've never been as high on Yasmani Grandal as some (Reds gave up the wrong catcher, Alonso>Mesoraco!) or as down on him as others (his career is over after his PED suspension!). I look forward to seeing what Grandal can do outside of San Diego (away from Petco Park) and with a change of scenery. With the Dodgers he's going to a team that doesn't require him to be the big bat, so there might be a great deal less pressure than he faced in San Diego. Previously he was acquired as a centerpiece for a young ace, now he's basically being acquired in a salary dump of a player the Dodgers really wanted to move - again, less of an expectation placed up on him.
It seems like a great opportunity for Grandal. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he has a breakout year (or perhaps comeback year) in 2015. Hitting 6th, 7th, or 8th in a lineup, rather than as a team's key run producer.

It makes sense for the Padres precisely because "no offensive FA wants to sign there". Not if there aren't other moves. Eh. I'm not a Kemp fan due to his durability issues and inconsistent effort level, so those aren't dice that I would roll. That said, what did the Padres give up? Two RHP prospects with 4th starter ceilings, one who has already undergone TJ. That doesn't seem like much of a loss. Then you have Grandal. I suppose it's within reason that Grandal outperforms Kemp in 2015 and beyond. I've read some predictions that Grandal is due for a breakout. So, that's a possibility. At the same time, there's a possibility that Kemp continues to hit as he did in the second half of 2014, which would be a big boost for the Padres who have struggled to find offensive production. And, they get to take that chance at a fairly reasonable price, $15.4M AAV over 5 years. If they believe in Kemp, then it's a deal that makes sense. They have 5 more seasons to add talent around him. Every journey begins with a single step.

The Padres still have Kennedy, Cashner and Ross, two of which they have actively shopped for a hitter already this off-season, I think it's safe to say they aren't done.

Rumors floating that Kemp may not have passed his physical. This could get awkward/interesting, if true.
