The minors are about player development of course, especially the lower levels, but Billings ran the table for their first title since 2003. Could be a good sign for next seasons Dayton club. Congrats to the Mustangs!
There... I fixed the thread title

It'll be interesting to see which players return to rookie ball and which go to Single A (or A+, or even AA).
Lots of the rookie ball prospects seem worth watching, but who knows where they'll start next year? Aristides Aquino, Brian O'Grady, Taylor Sparks, Kevin Franklin, Gavin LaValley, Tyler Mahle, Wyatt Strahan, Jeremy Kivel, Conor Krauss, and Garrett Boulware. Also Chadwick Tromp, Mark Armstrong, Ty Boyles of the Arizona Rookie League.... possibly all deserving of promotions.
Dayton also has big questions about which current players - Blandino, Ervin, Jackson Stephens, Zach Weiss, Alejadro Chacin, Nick Travieso, Sal Romano, Amir Garrett, Nick Howard - get promoted out of Dayton. It'll also be interesting to see whether Dayton continues to play raw-tools/limited production guys like Gabriel Rosa and Jonathan Reynoso, or if either guy can break through. Travieso, Garrett, and Howard I wouldn't be surprised to see promoted straight from Dayton to AA.
Most importantly next season I expect the Reds will have a better AAA team, with several legitimate prospects - particularly pitchers and outfielders - being sent there, seemingly for the first time in years.

Well, 2014 champs would be stating a fact, 2015 is a bold prediction. Maybe Redchuck is making the later

I guess I will revisit this thread a year from now to determine if I was simply guilty of a typo or if perhaps I am something of a fortune teller. At work I am forced to work with some carpet flying, red dot on the forehead Indian types... maybe some of their ali baba bullsh!t has effected me.......

A couple of weeks ago I made some unofficial and totally preliminary and non-binding prospect rankings (which ended up at 50 players, when including older non-prospects like Neftali Soto, Donald Lutz, and Ryan LaMarre), then sorted the relevant players into which of the full season teams they'd likely start out at. Educated guess, although spring training performances and injuries and other factors could sure change things quickly. Also lots of spots were left blank, to be filled by... well... filler.
For Dayton my predictions came to: 1b Argenis Aldazoro 2b Josciel Veras 2b Hector Vargas 3b Taylor Sparks 3b Gavin LaValley SS Cory Thompson OF Phil Ervin OF Aristides Aquino OF Brian O'Grady OF Jonathan Reynoso (raw skills, no performance guy) OF Gabriel Rosa (raw skills, no performance guy) C Garrett Boulware C Chadwick Tromp
SP Nick Howard SP Wyatt Strahan SP Dan Langfield SP Jackson Stephens SP Mark Armstrong
RP Jeremy Kivel RP Conor Krauss RP Tyler Mahle
I think there are lots of interesting names there, ranging from #1 draft picks (Howard, Ervin) to your young raw-skills guys (Rosa, Reynoso, Kivel). Plenty of top 3 or 4 draft picks from the past few years. Several who finished their season in rookie ball, like Armstrong and Strahan.
Of course part of being in the minor leagues is that anybody who performs well... particularly Ervin, Aquino, and Howard... might be quickly shipped to A+ or AA. Good luck to the Dayton Dragons, I hope they have a good 2015 season.

Bakersfield as our A+ affiliate continues to be a problem. Ervin needs to be moved up. Not that he has earned it or shown he is ready, but it will be his third season out of college. Even if he had success at Dayton next season, I don't know that it would say much about his development other than he is older than his opponents. Of course, the issue is similar in Bakersfield, but for stadium/league reasons moreso than age. In any event, I would start him out in Bakersfield and be ready to move him up quickly if he has success there. If he has to repeat AA in 2016, so be it.
Howard will probably start in Dayton. He would figure to be an A+ candidate, but I can't imagine we would want to convert him to starter in that place. If he dominates in Dayton, skip A+ altogether. For Travieso, whom I've never had hopes for, he's coming off a stellar season and building confidence. Why kill that in Bakersfield, where you get smacked around even if you are pitching well? I feel the same way about Garrett, but I guess somebody has to pitch in Bakersfield. Blandino is a little different b/c his development seems largely driven by fielding. Learning short may be easier if he is having success with the bat.
I think most of the Billings guys you mentioned will be in Dayton. LaValley and Aquino seem ready to be challenged with full season ball and better pitching. I expect both to struggle early, but that's part of development.

LaValley and Aquino seem ready to be challenged with full season ball and better pitching. I expect both to struggle early, but that's part of development. The Reds are no longer affiliated with the Bakersfield Blaze. Their affiliation ends at the end of this season (and the Blaze's season is over). 5 other A+ teams have also reached the end of their affiliation agreements: California League: Bakersfield Blaze (Reds) High Desert Mavericks (Mariners) Florida State League: Daytona Cubs (Cubs) Carolina League: Carolina Mudcats (Indians) Lynchburg Hillcats (Braves) Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Rangers) It's unclear if the Reds's A+ team will return to Bakersfield, and therefore premature to base player development plans on it. According to something I read, the Reds' ownership group also been affiliated with the Lynchburg Hillcats and Carolina Mudcats in the past. A new affiliation agreement somewhere should be announced in the next few months, and it may factor into the plans of several prospects, including Travioso, Howard, and Garrett. I agree that Ervin needs to be moved up, but whether that starts on the first game of the season or a month into it doesn't seem like a big issue, and seems hard to predict. Similarly Jesse Winker might return to AA to start next season, what matters is that he isn't there for long. Mike Lorenzen started his first full season in AA, which is the main reason I'd expect Howard to do the same, rather than any sorta logical development plan. One welcome problem the Reds might have in 2015 is an abundance of starting pitching prospects in AAA and AA, which may force somebody to begin the season in A+. Louisville is likely to feature Iglesias, Lorenzen, Moscot, Holmberg (like him or not, he seems sure to stay on the 40 man roster and 5 day schedule), and Josh Smith (assuming Corcino and Contreras don't return to the AAA rotation, and no top pitching prospects are acquired by trade... and Josh Smith seems like the only AAA or AA starter likely to be cut from the rotation in a roster crunch if Stephenson, Lively, or Garret gets promoted)... Pensacola is (in my opinion) likely to start out with Stephenson, Lively, Garrett, Daniel Wright... and perhaps Travieso and Howard competing for the final spot. One might find themselves as the odd man out. In other words, I think it's worth recognizing that at the upper levels of the minor league system there's real competition for rotation spots, rather than a desperate scramble to find somebody to fill in, which may get somebody of significant sent to A+.
