Can you name the players on the current Reds 40 man roster who were signed as true free agents.
I.E., they weren't brought into the Reds system by the Reds as drafted players, international signings, claimed off waivers, rule V picks or traded for.

I answered it myself - lone missing was Hannahan.
That is right - only 5 of the 40 were purchased.

Of the Reds' frontline players, they drafted and developed Mesoraco, Frazier, Cozart, Votto, Bruce, Hamilton, Bailey, and Leake, and Cueto came up through their system. Obviously, they aren't self-sufficient in developing talent, but they've improved tremendously over the last seven or eight years, across the changes in administrative personnel...

The '05, '06, and '07 drafts combined was probably the best overall run in Reds history. The '07 draft in particular has seen 9 of their 53 selections reach the bigs (though only 6 of them actually signed with the Reds). And 8 of them are still on active 40 man rosters. The '08 draft on the other hand looks sad in comparison. Only 5 have reached the bigs with 1 additional draftee (Sulbaran) still having a slim chance at the bigs (and 4 of those 5 (Stewart, Sappelt, Villarreal, and Freeman) received a cup of coffee and have since been removed from their respective teams' 40 man rosters). It's too early to accurately judge the '09-'13 drafts. |

I think the historical argument is interesting and difficult because of the major changes in contracts. In 1970, eight of the nine position players were either drafted and developed by the Reds or signed as amateur free agents and developed by the Reds before the institution of the draft, not including starting pitchers Don Gullett, Gary Nolan, and Wayne Simpson, all Reds draftees. Among position players, it's hard to do better than Bench, May, Helms, Perez, Rose, Carbo, Concepcion...
Add in the indentured servitude of the reserve clause, and the Reds not only signed and developed the core of the BRM: they had HOF talent at multiple positions for well below market value over the better part of a decade. But this is looking at the question in terms of signed/drafted/developed players on the Reds MLB roster in particular years, rather than in terms of annual classes. Agree that it's interesting to compare the annual classes and the proportion of MLB talent in each...
