This year's farm system is a complete joke. There is not one .300 hitter. It is true that Louisville is playing .500 ball, but without Reynolds they would be prety bad. Pensacola and Bakersfied haveburied themselves so far into the cellar they won't ever get out. Dayton is playing .400 ball. I know winning may not be themost important thing in minor league ball, but are the Reds teaching them anything. The stats say the the entire oganization is a joke.

The system is IMO middle of the road but I think we will be fine long term. We graduated slot of guys to the show or traded for players with prospects ...we will rebuild
I love the Irvin pick...reminds me of Phillips with the bat maybe a slightly better overall hitter

I think it's a fair and interesting question. I was wondering that myself just last night. I don't think much of the blame can be placed on the player development department, but I do think they earn some of it. Most of all, I suspect it's just a down year. Pitchers like Corcino, Guillon, Lotzkar, and Ravin have been various shades of atrocious. Hitters like LaMarre and Rahier have been awful and I do think the player development department deserves some blame for those two. Winker is a bright spot. Barnhart and Lutz have been solid. Stephenson and Cingrani have been very good. But, outside of those handful of guys, it's been a real cluster-cuss. It's still a very top heavy farm system and the lack of depth could be problematic when the trade deadline rolls around. Not many surplus assets of value these days.

In the past few years we have graduated and traded a lot of talent to make the big club better. With winning comes lower draft picks, and the new system doesn't let you spend more for extra premium talent anymore in the draft or internationally. We have some interesting young talent and a cldecent top of the system still.

I suffered through listening to the Bats split a doubleheader yesterday. Lost 4-0 in the opener with a grand total of 3 hits. 2 of the hits were infield singles by Billy Hamilton. Game 2 they miraculously won 1-0 while getting 2 hits. Thanks there goes to the ageless Mike Hessman for hitting a HR and Villareal, Duke and Christiani combining on a shutout. 14 innings, 1 run, 5 hits.... can't get any worse than that, right???
WRONG!
Pensacola yesterday lost both games of a doubleheader. Shut out in both games. Got 2 hits in the opener and 1 in the 2nd game. 14 innings, 0 runs, 3 hits.
Our upper level minor leagues is in shambles. Bakersfield and Dayton are only slightly better. Ouch!

It has far more to do with than just Latos. A number of top draftees are bombing out.

The big reason why our entire farm looks like Fecal Matter is players playing in leagues advanced for their experience. The talent is there. I believe we select more high risk high reward players than safe bets with the exception of this years draft because we needed to add talent that can perform right away in the minors.
I like how our farm is performing outside of some pitchers and Ryan LaMarre and Juan Duran. I think an uncommon number of our prospects will be repeating their level next year to start the season.
There have been a lot of players forced up the latter that are holding their own against more experienced and talented players. Players like Junior Arias, Donald Lutz, Yorman, BHam, have impressed me.
Players that I think can have really good bounce back years next year David Vidal, Corcino, Juan Duran.
I think Travis Mattiar can really improve next year. He will not avg over .280 but he has a lot of power.

Never really was sold on the LaMarre pick. I think he is a top 5 athlete in our system, but he never struck me as an everyday player. Even tho he went to Bitchigan I became a fan of him, but never thought he could be a difference maker at the big league level. He has the tools. There is still time, but I'm not to optimistic both him and BHam need to repeat.

What are you impressed with? His .248 batting average? His .302 OBP? His caught stealing rate of 1 out of 6 attempts? His defense has improved as the year has progressed and he has quickly jumped up a few levels, I will give you that. But he's a disappointment for a guy who was supposedly going to be ready to take over in CF for the Reds next season. No way that holds true unless he pulls off a miraculous turnaround with what is left of this season. And he is just an example of what is a pattern within the organization. Top levels I think expose it the worst, but its true throughout. Guys just not living up to their billing and hype. It is a sad fact that this organization has no one that can help the Reds this season or help acquire someone that can help unless you raid the one or two guys(Stephenson and Winker to name names) that have performed up to expectations. I agree the Latos and Marshall trades hurt the organization, but they shouldn't have caused the Reds to go from the upper rankings to rock bottom.

Junior Arias was a 21 year old with 4 previous years of pro ball under his belt playing in Dayton, not exactly a stretch IMO. The other players who have been "pushed up the ladder" have not performed well - no reason to be impressed.
