What do you think is more important to the Cincinnati Reds and the city (and surrounding areas):
1. Retiring #14
2. Hosting events that benefit the city and team greatly for publicity and economic gain.

Selig isnt' going to be in power forever. To my knowledge a team hasn't ever been banned from hosting the All-Star game and it is usually something granted with some semblance of order.
A Pete Rose week similar to the recent Larkin week would draw in likely more fans then the All-Star game festivities would to the point that the financial gains would be around a wash.
The number is all but officially retired. Everyone in baseball knows this, no player for the Reds who's last name isn't Rose will wear 14 again.
Pete isn't a young guy and retiring a number after the man has passed is not the way to do it, it also isn't the way to put them into the Hall of Fame either.
I want to see the Reds honor him in his lifetime for what he's meant to the franchise. Fans would likely pack the place for it so yes I think retiring his number would bring the city just as much as hosting a meaningless game, or hosting a event that would have had far more impact if it were held 50 years ago.
