They could retire it I believe, but Rose wouldn't be allowed to be on the field for the ceremony.
Personally if I owned the Reds I'd retire the number in Rose's name even if he could only attend while in the stands.
It infuriates me that the Reds aren't allowed to retire the number of one of their greats but have to retire the number of a player that didn't play a inning for them.

They could retire the number at a Bengal or Bearcat game with all three of them wherever the game was played . Mike Brown may not go along with it at Paul Brown Stadium. UC might not go along.
I have also been surprised UC didn't offer Pete a job as a coach. They could increase attendance just by him being there

Oh and the city or county owns Great American Ball Park. If they want to hang the number and name MLB can't really say anything . They are a tennant. If they want Rose to be there for a city ceremony, same thing.

Except we want to host an ASG and other important events for MLB in the near future...which wont happen if you have a bunch of Pete Rose Fecal Matter in your stadium.

That said, I'm sure Pete could have completed the qualifications years ago. He probably felt he could make more money doing live appearances and the hours college coaches put in are ungodly.

The only important event that I care about coming to Cincinnati are the playoffs. It would be tricky for MLB to take that away from the Reds even if they had the spot where Rose filled out his bets marked on the field and renamed the park Pete Rose's house of sports betting and baseball. I'm all for keeping Rose out of positions of influence with teams (no manager/coach/GM/front office/Owner and what not) but its been over 20 years, his actions very likely didn't have any major Black Sox level effects. The fans of the Reds generally adore him. Put him in the Hall, let the Reds retire his number and let it be done. 20 years is all but a life time ban in terms of a playing career (unless your Jamie Moyer) so I think that is enough in terms of punishment. For that matter the Black Sox should all be reinstated now and Hall eligible since their life time ban has been served.

That's cute all you want is the playoffs. But I dont get why you bring it up. Not like you can only have one or the other or that one influences the other. But the team wants the ASG. The city wants it. It is a huge deal and will be good for the city as a whole.

The All-Star game is a joke, I can't see it bringing in much more money then say Opening Day or any game where the stadium is full.
Personally I wouldn't kiss MLB's butt just to get it.
Other then the All Star game what other events are there.

Other then the All Star game what other events are there. We have had the civil rights game. And we get to keep opening day at home. You bring up opening day but the only reason we get to have it at home every year is because we dont do anything to really piss off Bud. You can't see it bringing in more? Maybe for the Reds, but the city wants it. It brings in a lot of tourist dollars. The ASG selection is a joke yes. But a lot of fans still like to watch and travel to it. It still attracts a lot of attention and commerce to your city. It becomes a spectacle downtown. Good for the city and thus the team. You get 4 events when you get the ASG. 1. The MLB All Star Game itself. 2. The Home Run Derby. - Imagine the crowd in GABP for this? HR hitting the river....etc 3. The MiLB All Star Game. 4. The Celebrity Softball Game. Not huge but still brings a lot of attention and draws a crowd for it.

The Reds have opened on the road before. They use to open every year as the first game as well.
I consider the Civil Rights game, anything that they do for Jackie Robinson to be the most idiotic stuff Selig has done in his tenure as Commissioner so if that was never bought to Cincinnati again I'd be more then fine with it.
The only reason Rose's number hasn't been retired yet is because Bud won't let him on the field for the Reds to do it.

It's about the team and the city. But since you have absolutely failed to address those issues about that I brought up, I am just gonna assume you have nothing to add or defend your stance and likely are just being grumpy today.
