from reds.com:
Rolen not expected to land on disabled list
SAN DIEGO -- It appears that Reds third baseman Scott Rolen's back spasms have improved enough that a trip to the disabled list shouldn't be needed.
"I don't want to go on the DL. I'm hoping that's off the table," Rolen said on Thursday. "I plan on being available [Friday] for sure. My activity level went up. I ran some sprints. I did some stuff in the weight room."
Rolen has not played since last Friday, but was scratched just before Sunday's game at San Francisco when his lower back locked up.
What Rolen wants should not even matter. The Reds need healthy professionals not a tin man that is constantly loosing his oil can.

Walt or Dusty needs to grow some balls and just DL Rolen already.
He cannot play in many back to back days, he's hitting a mighty .178 (Arroyo, Leake, and Valdez are hitting better), and keeping this team constantly down a man on the bench is going to do more harm than good over the 2nd half stretch.
This team needed him in 2010, they don't need him now. DL Rolen, let Frazier feast or famine at 3rd, bring up someone (anyone) from AAA and lets see how it goes.

I concur.
Rolen should retire or put himself on the DL.
But Rolen is totally self-absorbed spoiled child still. He wasn't able to get along with any manager he ever had before Dusty. Toronto practically gave him to the Reds to get rid of him. BTW, after Rolen came to Cincinnati he immediately went to the disabled list for headaches. Not now though. They say he is a good example to young players. Example of what, How to do whatever you want, not pull your weight and get away with it.

I'm honestly surprised Rolen hasn't had enough pride to just go ahead and hang em' up yet. This isn't the way I'd want to go out, if I was him.
He was clearly done at the end of 2010. He's gotten to the point of being so bad offensively it's embarrassing. He can still pick it at 3rd but his defense comes nowhere near to making up for his offense.
Really man... retire already.

I thought the Reds overpaid for Rolen when they traded for him. Thought that the extension was a really bad idea as well. They wouldn't have won the division without him in 2010, but that should have been the end of it. If he weren't Jocketty's boy I'd say they should just release him and be done with it, or trade him for another bloated contract that is near the end that could help them like Wells or Soriano (provided the difference is picked up by the Angels and Cubs)

I'm 99% sure that 2012 is the last year of Rolen's extension from 2010.

Rolen retiring is the best thing that could happen to this team. Even if Frazier comes back to earth in the second half, he's still going to be better than Rolen. And that frees us up to strengthen the bench for a playoff run via trade.

my thought is that he should come out and say "im obviously not a starter anymore, but I feel I can be a good bench player."
which he could! defensive fill-in, late-game PH .... i'd have no problem with Rolen doing that the rest of the year, then retire after the Reds win the world series

He got hit in the head by a Jason Marquis fastball in his second game with the Reds. Hardly "headaches".

The only reason Rolen isn't retired:

In a similiar vein Encarnacion just got a 3 year 27 million dollar contract. Doing fairly well as a DH/ 1Bman.

He didn't have the mental makeup/capacity to not let his defensive shortcomings affect his hitting. No compartmentalization that I ever saw. I could see him playing another 6-8 years as a DH.

Agreed if the NL had a DH or the Reds didn't have Votto, EE would have been great here.
I still think he was more then enough for Rolen on his own.

EE in June 2010 was outrghted to AAA. Then he dfa'd - claimed on waivers by OAK - and eventually nontendered a month later in Dec 2010! Hell of a come back to get that guranteed contract. TOR will hope he doesn't pull an Adam Lind.
