The Shackleton story is an all timer...Not 1 man was lost during the Endurance deal. Not one. Do you know the whole story?
Shackleton is bad ass.

I haven't gotten around to reading the book, but if I recall his ship got stuck in the ice for the winter and I think he trekked across the ice until he got help for his crew. Am I close?

trekked across the ice, then took 4 of men in a dinghy, and sailed a thousand miles across the icy sea to a sliver of an island, then walked across snow covered mountains to a whaling station to get a rescue ship and then go back for the rest if his crew...
took months, but he didn't lose a single man.

Well, he certainly seems worthy of the honorary avatar photo. At some point, I'll have to get around to reading the book. I knew it was a remarkable story and it sounds even more astonishing than I remember.
