Mario Soto - The Godfather, one of the reasons he was brought north I think is how much of a dominican base the Reds have now with bringing guys in and the guys they developed. It is building quite a bit in the minors too.
Francisco Corder - Closer, mentor, leader. A little older, a little wiser, now in his 30's. Soto is a great one to look up to, but its also good to have an active guy who can show them and work with them as well.
Edwin Encarancion - Despite his troubles, he has been here a few years and is an established MLB player in the clubhouse, but is still young and can be a buddy to Volquez who is just about his age.
Johnny Cueto - Great stuff, great command, great attitude, fearless on the mound. Hopefully we have an ace in the making right here, and he will be pitching for the Reds for at least the next ten years. After his 3 cheap years we should try to get a long term deal on the cheap that buys out his arbitration years. Something like a 6 year deal with a team option for the 7th. 6 years, $65 million, or something like that with a team option for $14 mil in that 7th year.
Edison Volquez - Another flame thwoer, a little older at 25 years old, if he can pitch like he did Sunday throuhgout the year, then it was definitely worth trading Hamilton and his big time injury risk for a guy that could be a great middle of the rotation starter for years.
And while not dominican the Reds also have JAvier Valentin and Juan Castro who are both hispanic as well. (PR and Mexico respectively)
Waiting in the minors:
Juan Francsico - Switch hitting, powerful bat (hit more HR in Low A than either Bruce or Dunn did), who has a canon arm at 3B.
Juan Duran - 16 year old likely won't see Cincy until 2013 at the earliest, but big time prospect
Pedro Viola - Lefty RP who was dominant last year going from Low A to AA, started this year in AA and will likely end it in AAA. Could start out next year in the bigs.
Ramon Geronimo - Closer in High A who had a pretty good year last year. Has the potnential to take that next step forward.
Enerio Del Rosario - In Low A Dayton, already has 1 save in the first few games.
Luis Montano - Starter in Low A Dayton.
The Reds have really been building a domincan base through their acadamy (EE, Cueto, Francisco, Duran) through trades (Volquez) and FA (Cordero) and it has paid off some dividends already for the Reds. I like to see them going more international, especially since we will never outbid th ebig market clubs for established talent like Ichiro and Fukudome.
