Today's lineup
Corey Patterson CF Jeff Keppinger SS Ken Griffey Jr. RF Brandon Phillips 2B Adam Dunn LF Edwin Encarnacion 3B Joey Votto 1B Paul Bako C Edinson Volquez P
It'd be nice to see a strong outing from Volquez too.

I'd like to see a multi-hit game from Votto too, especially since Hatteberg is only batting .091 on the season. Votto needs to make it apparent to Dusty that he should be playing on most days and not every other.

I'm already tired of Patterson as the leadoff hitter. He's got 3 hits, 2 of them homeruns, and only 1 walk. So far, his performance is that a run producer, not a table setter. Why not move Patterson down to the 7th spot, Keppinger up to the leadoff spot, and either Votto/Hatteberg in the #2 spot? I'd rather see something like this: 1) Keppinger ss r 2) Votto/Hatteberg 1b l 3) Dunn lf l 4) Phillips 2b r 5) Griffey Jr. rf l 6) Edwin 3b r 7) Patterson cf l 8) Catcher

I like your lineup alot more than the current one. Keppinger always makes good contact and I think he'd thrive hitting leadoff.

Agreed, I think Kepp could make a very solid leadoff hitter. It would get Dunn more ABs over the course of the season and maintain a nice R/L balance throughout the order.

Per Fay:
Pre-game Dusty
Manager Dusty Baker chatted with scribes in the dugout a couple hours before today's game. Some things he said:
-On Edinson Volquez, who is making his much-anticipated Reds debut today: "He’s been in the big leagues before. This is just a different situation,” Baker said, when asked if Volquez was nervous before his start. “I just passed him. He was eating breakfast. I mean, he’ll be fine. I ain’t worried about Volquez too much.”
-Francisco Cordero's win Saturday was his first victory since 2006. Baker said it was fortuitous that Aaron Harang had such a strong start, capped by Cordero's effort. “That was so big for us to win when we did,” Baker said. “Harang didn’t get the victory, but he got my bullpen back straight, which is huge.”
-The Reds haven't been prolific at the plate - yet. Baker said he wasn't worried. "I'd be more concerned if we weren't pitching well," Baker said. "A good team usually doesn't bust loose (in terms of hitting) in April. They bust loose when the weather's hot."

He really does seem to focus on workload, appropriate usage, and amount of rest that each reliever gets. Maybe that's something that Dusty will bring to the table that previous managers did not.

I could see Volquez struggle today ashe is goign against a tough lineup in his first Reds outing I'll be interested to see how he uses his curveball. I still think he'll need an effective breaking pitch to have consistent MLB success as a starter. In 2007, he threw 64.78% fastballs, 23.2% changeups, and only 12.03% curveballs. He needs something that will change the eye level of hitters. He can't rely simply on a change up speed, but rather needs to force hitters to worry about the break on the pitch as well.

I think it's also worth noting that the lineup hasn't changed at all has it? The regularity of it has to be helping the players. I think it'll pay off later by removing just one more thing the hitters have to worry about.

Well, let's hope Edinson gets off to a good start. A nice, quick 1-2-3 inning would be great. The Phils are tough and see a lot of pitches, so a quick start would be a big help.

No Cavs blocking the game for me today. Nope, Today it is sports science. What fun is it to be north of columbus at the moment.
