SS Tyler Callihan in round 3. Great pick if we can sign him... That might be tough, but we did manage to sign Siani last year. Looks like a steal if we can sign him.

RHP Graham Ashcroft in round 7 -- another good gamble -- he's only a sophomore and could end up going back to back to UA Birmingham. C Eric Yang from UCSB in round 8.
Although it's hard to get excited about anybody after the first three or four rounds.

It looks like their priority with those position players was raw power potential. I like that a lot.

Another hard-to-argue-with pick in round 9: CF Quin Cotton
You've got to take it with a grain of salt, but the Reds have drafted six players ranked in the top 200 by MLB.com.

We should be targeting these guys...
177 -- Julien, Edouard Auburn (AL) 2B S/R 4YR JR 6' 2 195lbs DOB:04/30/99
187 -- Rowan, Thomas UC Santa Barbara (CA) C R/R 4YR 5S 6' 1 200lbs DOB:11/08/95
We are now into the 15th round, and these two guys are out of baseball options in college. They can't refuse a major league offer unless they do not want to be a professional baseball player.
At this point we can give them slot max, which is basically throw away money. 2 top 200 prospects with no college options left.
The HS players can still refuse the money and go to school. These guys can't.

However, two issues: (as I recall) this was a down season for him and I'm pretty sure he's a sophomore this year and, hence, not draft-eligible. Is he a draft eligible sophomore? I'm pretty sure that's a thing, maybe having to do with age as a sophomore. I was thinking he was an option in a future draft, but maybe I'm wrong.

When it says they a 4 YR Junior, I thought that meant they are playing in their 4th year of eligibility and do not have any college options/years left after this. Especially the 4 YR, 5th year senior. Is this not the way the system works?

Both are off the board at this point. Neither was drafted by the Reds.

So, MLB ruled him eligible as a sophomore. Interesting, he's a sophomore at Auburn, but a junior in the draft. And, yes, the Reds should have drafted him. His swing is geared to do damage.
"After starring on Canada's junior national team, Julien spurned the Phillies as a 37th-round choice in 2017 in order to attend Auburn. He slammed 17 homers and broke the school's freshman RBI record held by Frank Thomas with 69 last spring. Though he's just a 20-year-old sophomore, MLB ruled him eligible for the 2019 Draft in March after deciding that his year at a Canadian secondary school was equivalent to a year in college. Julien is geared to hit for power and offers more than most left-handed college hitters in this year's class. His considerable strength and a stroke that features plenty of bat speed and loft combine to give him the ability to drive the ball out of any part of the ballpark. He draws a lot of walks because opponents are reluctant to challenge him, though there's also a lot of swing and miss in his game because he's so aggressive and will expand his strike zone. While Julien could stand to moderate his offensive approach, finding him a defensive home is a greater concern. After playing right field and second base as a freshman, he has looked shaky at third base this spring. With below-average speed, fringy arm strength and rough infield actions, he's likely destined for left field or first base."

You are eligible if you are 21 as of the date or the draft or within 45 days after the draft. Brady McConnell was a draft-eligible sophomore. There are quite a few of them every year. It happens often enough that the first thing I check on Gator signees is their birthdate. Want to know if they are going to be around for 2 years or 3.

Reds signed Callihan for more than double slot value. We will either not offer anything worth while to a couple top 10 prospects we drafted, or Lodolo is going to be taking less than slot.
I really like the Callihan pick though.

If there is one thing Candlestick and the Reds staff have impressed me over the past couple of years has been their ability to work the slot system to get the Reds maximum value out of their draft picks.
We saw this with Siani last year and inking Friedl the year before.

I really like the Callihan pick though. Lodolo has already (reportedly) agreed to slot value. Certainly will be interesting to see how they stay within the allotment but they don't draft those guys without knowing their numbers range and if they can make it work so I'm not worried. Fangraphs also expects them to have no issues with it and actually called out the Reds and Mets for getting great value with the over-slot guys. blogs.fangraphs.com/reds-and-mets-game-the-mlb-draft-system/
