I am going to go ahead and lay down money that The Volk has a better outing than Foggy, so give me your assessment of the SP. Lark and Starpower if I recall you guys had quiet a bit to say about the Affeldt and Fogg signings, what is your take? I am under the impression Fogg has a shelf of 1 good start a month, I think Belisle has about 1-1/2 to 2 good starts a month and given another month or so in the minors and Homer would be about the same.
So do we ride this rotation out until mid May or so and then look at a Harang-Arroyo-Cueto-Volk-Bailey or Belisle rotation, or is Fogg here to stay?
Btw, I thought Arroyo looked pretty good the other night after he settled down.

In my opinion, you leave it as it is right now until Belisle is ready to go. Then, Belisle takes Fogg's place.

Fogg will likely be on a short leash to see what Belisle can do. I'd still give Fogg time to have better outings, especially since his first was after a rain delay against a very good team.

Hello, first time post here.
The rotation is pretty impressive to me, just in comparing it to last year's. Obviously Volquez has yet to show us what he can offer, but if Fogg is our weakest link, we're in pretty good shape.

Glad to have you join our board !!
As for the rotation its very solid. I think in time Belisle will take over for Fogg who might be cut or at the very least move into the pen. If I were Reds I dont callup Bailey untill he is ready.

BTW, this is dgrace4cards from ESPN, decided to have different name on here, more catered to a REDS Board, with a touch of my hometown wrapped in.
I think it will be exciting to have Homer put in 3-4 good starts here with the Bats, then insert him at the 4 spot between Cueto and Volquez even if Volquez is better than Bailey. This will provide a different pace/delivery. It will make for a fun and interesting 2/3 of a season seeing that rotation.

I agree with Dusty that it is important to split up Cueto and Volquez since their styles are so similar. Hopefully Bailey will eventually be able to effectively fulfill that role. When that happens, the rotation will be firmly established.

First post here as well:
I definitely believe that the idea of splitting up Volquez and Cueto holds water. I think if those 2, Harang, and Arroyo do their thing the way they're capable of, we can easily carry Homer as our 5th starter after he gets a few 'quality' starts at Louisville.
I'm in no way saying that I don't think we'll be alright with Belisle or Fogg in there but I do believe that it would be very beneficial for Bailey to be on the roster to see with his own eyes how Cueto and Volquez perform.
Having said that, we may have a better rotation 'right now' with Belisle or Fogg as the 5th starter but I do believe it would help us out in the long term to have Bailey here and now. It's hard for me to fathom being in that position but I believe it to be so. I don't ever remembering a time when we had what seemed to be a surplus of pitching, whether it be pitching potential or not, we have it. What a time to be a Reds fan!!!
Keep those minor league rpts coming Starpower25!!

Actually, I'm going to change my opinion....
1. Harang 2. Cueto 3. Arroyo 4. Volquez 5. Fogg/Belisle/Bailey when ready
Not necessarily because that's their order or anything, but because you do want to split up Cueto and Volquez with a guy who throws differently. Who throws with more of a different approach than Bronson?
Not to mention should the time come that we switch to a 4 man rotation late in the year, bingo, you're ready to just drop Fogg off and keep moving exactly as you were.

At this point rotation order isn't quite so important as its going to be jumbled up because Harang will be going every 5th day regardless and every one else is lotting in time behind that. Volquez just pitched the day after Harang, and will again the next time too so technically you could say that he is our #2 for teh next week or so, and then it will be someone else after another off day and Harang is moved up again.
I leave Bailey down in AAA to master the changeup and slider, and also work extensively on becoming pitch effeicient and commanding the strike zone. Belisle dominated in a rehab start in High A, and he has more of a track record.

When that happens, the rotation will be firmly established. When Bailey develops his third pitch and gains better control of his first two, he will also be similar to Volquez and Cueto. We're going to run out of soft tossers to put between them

Just read Buster Olney's blog, and his blurb about the Reds talked about Volquez looking good, and he posed the question that he himself deemed unthinkable, "Could the Reds have the deepest rotation inthe NL?"

Even if all of our guys come out and pitch to their potential....I'd say that the Dodgers have the deepest roto in the NL. That said, if Bailey wakes his ass up and comes up mid-year, we might have one of the deepest in baseball. But this all hinges on MANY ifs. I think every team has a lot of ifs that would make them among the best.
