Is it just me, or does Patterson's swing appear to be just about the wimpiest swing on the team? It seems like it's all arms with little weight shift, almost like a flail. It also appears that he gets a late start to his swing sometimes, and can swing at some bad pitches.
These are just my observations, and they really have little to do with the results - whatever gets the job done is all that is needed. There are many different effective hitting styles. To me, however, Patterson's is one of the least exciting to watch. I don't see where his power comes from.
Does anyone else see his swing this way?

It's an odd looking swing, but I have a hard time with the notion that Patterson "gets the job done." By the by, love the screen name. Scott Scudder is a real blast from the past.

Yeah, I'm definitely skeptical of Patterson's results too. But my main point is that I'm just completely underwhelmed by his swing...er... flail. It just looks really weak to me. Like scottscudder, eh? I came up with it after reading through the thread of Reds pitching prospects gone bad. I remember everyone was really high on Scudder, and I ran out and bought his rookie card - a great investment!

I think his approach is inconsistent. He has driven the ball a few times. Hopper is the one that bugs me because his balance and mechanics takes away any chance at power. Casey used to bug me too because his homers were all arms. BP is a good example of someone who uses their strength well to drive the ball.

I think C-Patt has taken a lot of criticism this year with little reason behind it. History indicates he's not the most patient hitter, but so far he's seeing more pitches and has hit 2 HRs for us with a good SB this game. I think he's been amazing value for a non-roster invitee for spring training. We have very little invested into him.

I think he's been amazing value for a non-roster invitee for spring training. We have very little invested into him. Well, I think it's fair to question whether that is true. We've got $3M invested in him, which is a hefty sum. I also think that calls into question what role Bruce will have this year. At this point, it seems more likely that Bruce will be in the minors all year and get a September call up. The only thing that might change that is an injury to Dunn, Patterson, or Griffey. I just don't see Dusty willing to start Bruce over any of our current three starters. And, I'm not sure Krivsky is going to be wild about the idea of having another $3M ballplayer riding the bench. Freel is a nice addition to the bench, but Patterson at $3M would be absurd on the bench. At this point, I think Patterson is expected to keep his job the entire year and may be back next year. Unfortunately, I'd say that it is very likely that we are and will have a good deal invested in C-Patt.

I for one love the patterson signing. I think he is coming into his own as a hitter and will have a career year for Reds. I would not be upset with a 2 year deal if he has a solid 1st half of the season.
Look for a 20/40 year from Patt with a .270 avg and solid D in the outfield

Also, I guess I consider 3 mill not investing much in a starting player when guys like Ross and Afeldt make nearly as much. 3 mill is fair for a guy who could steal 35+ bases with some pop in his bat.

In a perfect world we would not have to hit Patterson lead off but I still think he improves his OBP this year.
