Am I the only one who thinks giving Cueto 20-25 mil per is a horrible idea? I think there are advantages and disadvantages to trading any one of Cueto, Latos, or Leake, and the same goes for signing them. Where Cespedes is concerned, the Reds need more in return for Latos. Cespedes isn't a good on-base offensive player, the Reds at least have to get back a player or players to shore up the bench and add depth. If the Sox try to knock down the return by emphasizing the injury risk, I think the Reds either have to walk away from that--unfortunately, because we could use Cespedes--or perhaps work on deal involving one of the other two pitchers... Still assuming the Reds want to make a run in 2015. If we deal two pitchers from the rotation, I think that significantly reduces those chances... IMHO, assuming this hypothetical trade actually is kicked around this winter (which I believe it will be - the Reds options will be slim - especially if they don't have cash) Latos' medicals will have to be 100% to get approximate value for him. If they are I do think BOS would have to kick in a 2nd piece - a pitching prospect would be my guess. As for Cueto, he is the best Reds starter I've ever been alive to see, that said - can they afford to have both he and Votto making 45M$ combined? Votto may already be on the downhill, if Cueto were to pull a Sabathia the Reds would be fuc*ed.

I believe the Reds tv deal will be one that allows them to jump payroll by around 40 million a year. So while Cueto pulling a CC would cripple the Reds just like it would any team I don't think it would be as massive a hit as it would have been in years past.
That being said I think they offer him a deal better then Bailey's of course, but not at the market either. I think it might be wise for the Reds to lock up Leake and go after veterans on shorter deals, like a James Shields for 4 or 5, instead of a Cueto at 7 or 8.

If the pitching prospect can contribute in the bullpen next season, it serves the same purpose as shoring up the bench: making a run in 2015. There's no way to know what the Red Sox would deal, but the point is getting usable MLB talent in exchange for the same. If that doesn't work with Boston, I'd look for a different deal: the Reds don't have enough assets to take any magic beans for proven talent...

I would worry about any pitching prospect that the Sox would be willing to deal. They have a lot of fringy kids that are long men/5th starters at best.

If we could trade Latos to the Red Sox for Cespedes and a reliable bullpen arm, that seems like a deal worth making. I don't think they can trade one of their starting pitchers and not address two of their problems, not with a player like Cespedes as the main return...

I think a practical trade would be something like Latos (if healthy) for Cespedes and possibly a 2nd piece like Noe Ramirez (someone the Red Sox have to add to the 40 man next month). He projects as a 7th inning guy, would have 6+ years of control at league minimum. Not a top tier prospect but by all accounts looks like a future big leaguer and isn't down in A ball.

I just don't see the Reds getting a top tier prospect thrown into such a trade.

Another possibility might involve someone from their current bullpen mix. If I was already considering adding to the Reds bullpen through free agency, the deal for Cespedes and the magic bean would look more attractive...

Yeah, thinking along the same lines, though they might not want to deal from a thin staff... I'm not sure what role they envision for Rubby, so I could see him being expendable. And, he could arguably fill either a rotation spot or a high leverage relief role for the Reds. And, if we are making a big postseason push in 2015, then someone who can contribute immediately makes more sense than a minor league prospect.
