Chris Valaika has 20 rbi in 21 games played. He has 4 HR and is hitting .348
Juan Francisco and Todd Frazier both have 12 extra base hits in 20 and 19 games respectively. Frazier leads all Reds prospects with 6 HR.
Drew Stubbs has 11 SB in 20 games, 6 of which have been stealing 3rd, and he is hittnig .338 with a .417 OBP, with 7 2B and 2 3B.
Jay Bruce has just had a great all around start: .338 avg 4 HR 13 rbi 14 run 6 SB .950 OPS
That's 5 new offensive starters in the next two years I think. Bruce at some point this year, and then Stubbs, Frazier, Valika, and Francisco will all hit at about the same time. They'll probably mix in between the start of 2009 or by midseason, and I think all of them are on the big club by 2010.
Bruce, RF Francsico, 3B Stubbs, CF Frazier, LF Valaika, Any open spot, good athlete
Add that to: Brandon Phillips, 2B Jeff Keppinger, SS
and thats 7 of the 9 everyday positions I am excited about over the next 3-5 years. The Reds need to make a deal for more immediate catching. Maybe try to pull off one of these trades:
Rangers get: Bronson Arroyo Adam Dunn Matt Maloney Marcus McBeth
Reds get: Jarrod Saltalamachia
or:
Astros get: Adam Dunn Edwin Encarnacion Matt Maloney Marcus McBeth
Reds get: JR Towles
or:
Mariners get: Ken Griffey Jr. David Ross Matt Maloney Marcus McBeth
Reds get: Jeff Clement
or maybe try to go after a vet like AJ Pierzynski or Pudge Rodriquez.

That's a lot to give up for those catchers, don't you think?
I mean, maybe if we were talking about Wieters, but he's not short term, either.

My reasoning was that getting rid of Arroyo's about to be large contract will diminish his value, fire sale time, and Maloney and McBeth aren't top flight prospects. Now for Weiters, it would have to look more like this: Orioles get: Bronson Arroyo Adam Dunn Homer Bailey Chris Valaika Reds get: Matt Wieters And it would require that they be in the hunt at the all-star break so that Arroyo and Dunn could be difference makers for them. Just imagine the Reds 2010 lineup when all the prospects have arrived: 1. Drew Stubbs, 2B 2. Jeff Keppinger, SS 3. Jay Bruce, RF 4. Brandon Phillips, 2B 5. Joe Votto, 1B 6. Todd Frazier, LF 7. Juan Francisco, 3B 8. Matt Wieters, C Johnny Cueto Aaron Harang Edison Volquez Daryl Thompson Christian Friedrich or Jordan Smith

Wow, I tend to agree with awnawboi. That's a ton to give up for a catcher.

Wow, I tend to agree with awnawboi. That's a ton to give up for a catcher. It's one of, if not the hardest position to acquire, and Wieters has gigantic potential, and if we want an all around catcher that is a significant upgrade from Bako and Ross, that is what I think it would take. We could maybe pull this off at the trade deadline for a Wieters type prospect, assuming the O's are in the playoff hunt: Orioles get: Adam Dunn Bronson Arroyo Devin Mesoraco Chris Valaika Marcus McBeth Reds get: Matt Wieters

Mesoraco may turn out to be the catcher we need in a few years. Overall, that strikes me as a tremendous overpayment. If we kept Dunn until after the season and let him walk, then we'd get 2 compensatory picks, either of which could potentially bring in an elite catcher. They wouldn't be top 15 selections, but Mike Piazza was a 62nd round pick and Russ Martin was a 17th round pick. Catchers are out there to be had, we just need to do a better job of finding one. Personally, I think that trade would be a significant overreaction to a perceived need and big net loss of value from the organization.

I agree Lark, if that's what it takes, I'll pass.
I don't think it'd require that awfully much to get Salty....but I didn't think the Orioles could possible serious in their demands for Bedard.

In that last trade for Wieters that I proposed, none of those guys are irreplacable, and Weiters has MVP type of talent. He could be a .290 40 HR, 120 rbi type of player from the C spot.
Valaika has a great bat, but not as good as Wieters (especailly power) and is blocked by a lot of our other prospects
McBeth is a bullpen guy, and not a dominant one
Mesoraco would be replaced by Wieters
Maloney is a fringe back of the rotation starter and we have Bailey and Thompson, and now probably Smith ahead of him, not to mention Lotzkar or our potential 1st rd pick this year.
Arroyo is getting expensive and his value is greatly diminished
Dunn's 2 draft picks would be worth giving up for an impact bat at a premium position like Catcher.
