Ashcraft is struggling but the guy is pretty much wrapping up a "rookie season". That was his 29th start. He had 8 starts in AAA. With everyone jumping on his bandwagon so quickly, it's not surprising that they're jumping off quickly. This story will be repeated with some of our current minor leaguers.
Ashcraft may be suffering the shift rule change more than the typical starter. Yes, his hr rate is way up in the last 4 games but sometimes there is a relationship - extended innings, hitter approach adjustments.
Broadly speaking, that a 6th round pick starter is not a quality #3 at the end of his first full year, shouldn't be disturbing. He has faced some good hitting teams and the Rockies at Coors of late, so barring an injury, I think the pendulum will swing back to the middle at least.
I hate losing to the Cards, because I think deep down, I have the belief that they have mentally prepared better than the Reds for decades, not just because of talent. Cards are 225-167 since 2000. The Reds have won 10 games in the season series once over that stretch. The Cards 14 times. I will call it the BP curse (AKA "whiny little bitches").

A 2 - 7 STL pitcher absolutely shut us down.

The Reds have looked good as of late. Winning is fun! Gibault blows another 9th inning save opportunity and ends up with the win. Seems unfair, but those are the rules. @ 7 - 1, I feel like this guy is doing it with smoke and mirrors.

The reds going .500 in the Braves and Orioles series isn't bad at all. They were so close to winning that Braves series too.
Those are two of some of the best teams in baseball and even with our deficiencies-the Reds are considered the most exciting team in baseball right now! That's cool 😁
I think we're winning the division.

Reds sure look flat today in game 2 against the Padres.
Bullpen gives up 9 runs so far as it's 10-1 in the 7th. Bell took out the start under 90 pitches in the 6th so he wouldn't face the lineup 3 times.
Is this a smart choice? Sure, if you have an unlimited bullpen, but that's not reality.
Bell uses the bullpen well beyond their means. That's the problem. Always has been. Marty Brennaman pointed that out in 2019 and nothing has changed, just a wake of pitcher injuries from then until now.
Oh well. That's how this skipper does it. Lets see how it goes after the AS break.

So glad the Reds pulled off the win today! Abbot looked great and Tiebreaker Stephenson w/ the game winning HR!
Reds take the series against the Padres 😎

Proof Tyler reads the game threads (redlegnation)!! -------------------------------- Mario 06/28/2023
"TySteve is having a tough year but it’s way too early to give up on him. He was one of the Reds better hitters before the injury."

" Definitely agree here. Sometimes I would like to see him alternate some more aggressive plate appearances. He’s a good hitter with pop who sprays the ball well but I feel like he’s letting the pitchers shape the at-bats. They should fear him. Maybe the injury plays into it but it’s part psychological."
------------------------------ Just kidding, but this week, he really has been doing this, jumping on pitches he can drive early in the count. He'll earn more first pitch nibbling and set up better counts to do more damage. Hopefully, by the end of the season, we all will come back to seeing how important he is to the franchise. We have good depth at catcher but I don't think anybody has his upside.

We'll, hope we have a strong series against the Nationals before going headlong into the Brewers for 2 series.
This is a big deal. Who will be in first after that?

De La Cruz seems to be coming down to Earth. Nobody expected him to hit .360. Pitchers are working him very tough. They're already pitching him like he's Acuna, Soto, or Tatis. He's not seeing many fastballs. He's holding his own; good learning experience and it's only a matter of time before he does more damage.

We're not getting on base as much. Almost every score is a home run.
Cruz will figure it out. It's a big adjustment and pitchers are concentrating so hard on him.
