No one has probably noticed, but Jose Lopez is putting together a nice little season. Not on the prospect list though either. The stats say he might be pretty good.

He's definitely had a good month. He's been better in AA than he was in High A statistically. Fastball is good, not sure on his offspeed stuff.

Danny Darwin must be a great pitching coach. His staff led the southern league in ERA last year, and they are leading it this year. His alumnus include Areil Hernandez, Castillo, and Mahle, and now maybe Lopez. I did a little research and it appears he might have helped develop Kershaw, and Jansen for the Dodgers. I also found out he once punched out Orel Hershier, and got into a fight with Barry Bonds about hustling on the field. Nolan Ryan called hi doctor death because of all the fights he was involved in. Maybe the Reds need to think about promoting him.

went six last night and allowed two runs. Should have gotten the win, but the bullpen blew the lead.

Reds will have a very tough decision on whether or not to protect him from the upcoming Rule 5 draft here shortly. Mahle, Siri, Blandino, Long, Weiss, Lopez, LaValley, Longhi, Strahan, Elizalde, Chacin, etc.. A lot of possible additions.

Wood and Storen will not be back. The may not even last out the season with Disco coming back. Alcantara will not be back ( thank goodness) Aquino, Aquino and Kiviehan are on the bubble.
Elizarde has performed well enough to be brought up. Do the Reds have to purchase a contract once the minor league season is complete.

Elizalde will be rule 5 eligible but he will not be a six-year minor league FA. I don't think he'd be claimed if he's left unprotected, he doesn't have the upside teams are looking for (he's probably done developing and the power just isn't there). Typically teams want lefthanded bench pieces who can hit for power (since he is definitely a platoon player at the mlb level - can't hit lefties). The Reds control his minor league rights through the 2019 season. There will be a lot of movement on the 40 man between now and November.

Lopez did it again Friday night 7 innings, only 6 baserunners, 1 run. That is 5 good starts in a roll. Elizarde hasn't done that bad against lefties. .245 average. According to the scouting report on him he runs faster and has a better arm than Winker.

To Add 7, the Reds have to Subtract 12 (since the 40 man is currently at 45), Below are the myriad of possibilities as I see it:
Free Agent Losses: Cozart Storen Feldman Arroyo
DFA-Outright Possibilities (would then qualify as minor league free agents): Adleman Shackelford Wojciechowski Alcantara Ogando Bonilla Brice Aquino Kivlehan (not a 6 year milb FA but could elect FA since it'd be his 2nd time being outrighted)
DFA-Outright Possiblities (would not qualify for free agency if they clear waivers): Travieso Astin Turner
Arbitration NonTender Possibilities: Wood Cingrani
---Everyone else I presume is a near lock to stay on the 40 man roster through the winter. Bailey, DeSclafani, Finnegan, Castillo, Romano, Stephenson, Davis, Garrett, Reed, Stephens, Mella, Iglesias, Lorenzen, Peralta, Hernandez, Mesoraco, Barnhart, Votto, Gennett, Peraza, Suarez, Herrera, Duvall, Hamilton, Schebler, Winker, and Ervin.

Out of all of those I wouldn't care if they left Mella off of the list.

You also have to think about protecting Jesus Reyes over Keury Mella. Huge ground ball rates, solid stuff, has been good since his promotion to AA.

Reyes is org filler, he'll be 25 on opening day and has little upside. I'd put his odds of being added near 0%.

The Reds have to protect guys who may have large contributions to the future. Reyes may be a late bloomer, but his future is that of a 7th inning reliever if he makes it. Mella will likely be given one more offseason to advance his skills, but is likely an early candidate to be removed next year if he doesn't do just that.
