great game 1st minor league no-hitter since 2015. Wonder when the last perfect game was.

When do we get to acknowledge that he is one of our best prospects? He's already better at the AA level than Stephenson ever was.

The announcer said it was the first minor league no-hitter since 2015, but the Reds website says that Mahle threw one last year with Daytona. Almost perfect there too. Hit a batter.

That 2015 number was probably just limited to AA, or the Southern League. Mahle threw a no hitter for Daytona last year (the only person to reach base was hit by a pitch that actually hit the end of the bat). And I was wrong, he did it in 88 pitches (68 strikes), not 89. He only had one 3 ball count.

I suspect Gavin Lavalley will be in Pensacola before mid-season. He's off to a good start in Daytona (.303 w/ 6 HRs including last night's walk off) coming off a strong finish there last season. He has played 112 games at that level now with 17 HRs. Late May-Early June promotion?
Tyler Stephenson is also off to an encouraging start, but he figures to spend most of the year in Dayton, maybe earn a late season promotion as a reward for a strong season?
Today, Mahle, Gutierrez and Santillan are all starting. I'm more interested in our minor league games when we start guys for whom we have some hope. Austin Ross is dominating at Pensacola, but who cares?

6 more shutout innings for Mahle. His ERA is now 0.55.
Good starts for Gutierrez and Santillan as well.

Mahle's line this year so far is ridiculous. 32.2 IP 0.55 ERA 0.52 WHIP 34 K 6 BB 11 H Still just 22 years old, his fastball has been 90-95 (he regularly changes speeds intentionally) and can touch 97 when he needs it.

Is it time we start taking Wennington Romero seriously as a top prospect as well? He was good in the DSL and AZL, now he's dominating early at Dayton at the age of 19.

Tough call as he is a command and control guy more than a stuff guy. Command and control guys typically do well in Low A, but then struggle as they move up the ladder and have to miss bats more as hitters chase less. He's a smaller guy, so it's tough to tell if there is much more projectability left in his arm.

Tyler Mahle's older brother is on waivers, the Angels DFA'd him yesterday. He still has 2 option years left.

I noticed on Baseball Prospectus, they track velocity during Spring Training. Apparently Mahle averaged 95mph on his fastball in Spring Training. It was just 9 pitches, but still. Between that, his age, the strikeouts, and his refusal to walk people, I think he's a top 100 prospect.

Between that, his age, the strikeouts, and his refusal to walk people, I think he's a top 100 prospect. Mahle's best features are his command, control, and intelligence/pitchability. That's not to say he doesn't have good stuff, but his stuff plays up so well because he just knows how to pitch. He can hit the high 90's, but he's smart enough to sit 93-95, take some off and drop a 90 mph 2 seamer in from time to time, but still have the juice to run it up to 97/98 when he needs it. He's a pitcher, not a thrower. The rumored report is that the last pitch of his perfect game he was so amped up he threw his fastball at 99 mph. I've heard that from several sources. Less frequently I've heard that earlier in the start he hit 100 mph. His curveball movement is just average, but he can spot it for strikes as well as bury it in the dirt as a chase pitch. His slider is his best secondary offering as it is usually above average, but can flash as a plus pitch when it is at its best. The changeup I'd also consider above average, but it doesn't flash better than that nearly as much as the slider does. It wouldn't shock me if he continued to refine his change into a legitimate plus pitch as he gets older and more experienced against better hitters, but I won't count on that until we see it, that's just speculation on my part. Things like a perfect game get guys noticed, and Mahle has had a few fans in the prospect ranking community before his insane April (I think it was Keith Law who had him on his preseason top 100 list) and JJ Cooper called Mahle a fringe top 100 guy last offseason as well. Unless the wheels come off or he has a devastating injury, i'll be pretty surprised if Mahle isn't on just about all of the midseason top 100 lists, and is in the Reds top 3-4 prospects (assuming Garrett has graduated).

Greg Mahle cleared waivers and was outrighted to LAA's AAA affiliate.
