Interesting, albeit unsurprising, to see Sparks returning to Daytona. It makes sense for several reasons. Eric Jagielo it's in AA and it's more regarded generally. Sparks had a huge K rate last year (albeit this was starting to improve in the second half). He likely would have started last year in Dayton if Tanner Rahier wasn't a rock throwing moron (and the moron is back this year). Sparks showed some good power, but the average was pretty weak. It makes a lot of sense to start Jagielo and Sparks in AA and A+ respectively to hopefully find done consistency and success in a couple of high ceiling prospects. This also gives Seth Mejias-Brean one more shot as a starter to see if he can finally convert raw power to in game power to go with his very good plate discipline. By midseason if SMB doesn't force them to keep him starting through performance, look for Jagielo to AAA, Sparks to AA and Rahier getting another shot as a full time 3B to see if there is anything there. Brantley Bell will start at 3B in Dayton and he'll be 21 all season so I doubt they rush to promote him unless he is just crushing it.

The Tortuga's beat the D2 school 7-1. I haven't seen details, but Aristides Aquino had 2 HR in his first two swings.

Aquino can hit??? I mean, a D2 school still throws baseballs... maybe not the highest level of competition, but some sorta competition. Not T-ball... right?

To be fair Aquino hit a ton in 2014, and then was hurt last year and never seemed right. I'm a little surprised he was moved up, he must have looked pretty good in spring training. It's one of the best D2 baseball schools if it makes you feel any better.

5 days into the season, the Louisville Bats have now had an impressive 4 consecutive days cancelled for bad weather... 5 games, if you include a make-up doubleheader that was also rained out. It started in Toledo, and has followed them to Columbus. Hopefully they'll play a game in Columbus on Tuesday, and a doubleheader Wednesday.
I'm just going to pull out a few interesting, for better or worse, performances throughout the system... from the teams that have played a bit... lots of others have average/uninteresting/meh performances not worth mentioning.
AAA Louisville: SS Jose Peraza - I thought he'd play more in AAA. Instead he's played less than DeJesus. Although that's not a matter of poor planning.
LHP Cody Reed - The weather won't permit him to start a game. Good thing Stephenson was called up, at least he pitched...
AA Pensacola: 3b Eric Jagielo - 5/21, 0 BB, 10 K. Ouch. 1 HR.
CF Phil Ervin - 4/17, 1 BB, 7 K. So far the spring magic (9/23) hasn't followed him.
RHP Jackson Stephens - 5 IP, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K.
A+ Daytona: CF Brian O'Grady - 5/12 (.417), 2 BB, 2 K
OF Aristides Aquino - 5/17 (.294), 2 BB, 5 K, 2 SB. Keep it up. I have no faith in Aquino, but so far so good.
SS Blake Trahan - 1/18 (.056), 1 BB, 3 K. I guess that means he's hit the ball into an out 14 of 18 times up. Ouch. He did well in Reds spring training (9/21, 2 K) and now can't seem to get a hit no matter what he does. Only if he was striking out might I be worried, though.
RHP Nick Howard - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K. Scoreless inning of relief! Only three baserunners in that inning!
A Dayton: 1b James Vasquez - 3/9, HR, 0 BB, 0 K.
C Tyler Stephenson - 2/9, 3 BB, 1 K.
LHP Jacob Constante - 1 IP, 2 H, 5 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, 45.00 ERA. That was a start, not a relief appearance. Rough full-season debut for a relatively costly international signee.

I was at the Dragons game, here’s my impressions:
Tanner Rainey had a nice start, thanks mostly to his fastball control. Neither the breaking ball nor the changeup looked more than fringe average from what I saw, and it was reflected in only getting 2 K’s. Fastball was solid though, sitting 91-92, but he flashed a few 93’s as well. Who impressed the hell out of me was West Michigan’s starter Beau Burrows, the Tigers 1st round draft pick last year. Sat 93-95, hit 96, the breaking ball was hit or miss but when it was on it flashed plus potential, and he worked in a usable changeup as well. Maybe we can trade Alfredo Simon for him.
Shed Long has a nice compact swing with very good bat speed, he showed above average speed as well. On the sac fly the P cut off the throw home to try to get guy at first because Long was already there. He did almost let them get back in the game in the bottom of the 9th when he didn’t cover 2B on a steal and the ball sailed into CF advancing the runner to 3rd. Never like seeing those kind of mental mistakes.
Mardirosian’s swing is a lot like Long’s, but with less bat speed. He roped a nice single to RF to start the game but Gonzalez wiped him out with a double play ball. Mardirosian made a nice running, leaping grab in LF later in the game as well. Seems like a gamer, kind of reminded me of Chris Valaika.
Jeremy Kivel is just like last year. Electric arm, no clue where it’s going half the time.
Narciso Crook hit the ball hard, just right at people. Covered a good amount of ground in CF, I think he sticks there.
Tyler Stephenson is a big dude. The swing is a little long though, he might K a ton this year. That throw that Long let sail into CF was a rocket, would have had the runner. I missed the other 2 SB attempts fulfilling my parental duties.

After two trips through the rotation AA Pensacola's has been as good as advertised.
Amir Garrett (23), 12 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 11 K. Rookie Davis (22), 11 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K. Jackson Stephens (21), 10.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 16 K. Sal Romano (22), 10.1 IP, 12 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 10 K. Nick Travieso (22), 9.2 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 8 K.
Travieso is now on the DL with a (groin?) injury, but likely shouldn't be out long.
I'm pleasantly surprised by Romano and Stephens. -Romano had a lot of trouble following his late season promotion to AA last year, but has seemingly pitched much better through his first two starts. -Stephens struck out 97 in 145.1 IPs last year in Daytona, I doubt anybody expected him to be running away with the team lead in strikeouts at any point. Even two starts in. He soon turns 22, put up a 2.97 ERA last season, but is rarely mentioned alongside his teammates as a top prospect.
It'll be interesting to see who earns the first promotion to AAA Louisville. Keury Mella, Wyatt Strahan, Tejay Antone, and Tyler Mahle are in Daytona's rotation, but so far (through two starts) none seem to be making strong cases for promotion. Yet.
