I just read more about it. www.baseballamerica.com/international/2016-year-break-international-bonus-pool/www.baseballamerica.com/international/2015-16-mlb-international-bonus-pools/www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016-17-international-prospectsFor this 2015-16 signing season the Reds, as #10 in the reverse standings, had a $2.8m bonus pool. The #2 team had a $5m bonus pool. In 2016-17 the Reds will be that #2 team, with the second highest bonus pool. From MLBTradeRumors, " The Angels, Blue Jays, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Giants, Rays, Red Sox and Yankees are all prohibited from spending more than $300K on any one player in the 2016-17 international signing period due to exceeding their spending pools in either of the last two signing periods." Next year the Reds have a larger bonus pool and many of the big spenders will be unable to target top international free agents. Should the Reds have sacrificed that opportunity for Eddie Julio Martinez??? Jorge Ona, a ~20 year old OF ranked in April as the 6th best player left in Cuba, defected a few months ago and will be available for the 2016-17 signing period. Maybe, just maybe, he signs with the Reds. I think we have to wait until the 2016-17 signing period until a serious argument can be made that they were better off with Eddie Julio Martinez....
