Who is this kid and why is he still at Dayton? He gets batters out. He didn't pitch in spring training.

He's in Dayton because he has never been in full season professional baseball before. He was very good in Billings last year, but I haven't seen any scouting report on him before. As a 26th rd pick, he'll have to prove himself at every level.

Well, he has shown good control. His strike out ratio is good. He gets batters out. That should be the only criteria that matters, not where he was drafted.

The point about where he was drafted is that he won't get additional chances like a high pick like Ervin who hasn't hit in full season ball yet or YRod who has been around for 7 years now, not that he can't be any good. The ratios and counting numbers are good so far, but it's only 28 or so innings as a professional and a whopping 2 in Low A. Guys don't get promoted off of one good week. The scouting report isn't talking about overpowering stuff either, but a lefty with control and 2 pitches that work (fastball/curveball) has a shot of being something. If he dominates Low A through their all star break, then maybe you question if it's time to move up.

He should be getting them out, he's older than them and played collegiality (LA Mission College and Cal State Dominguez Hills). When 30 teams pass on you 25 times you have some flaws which will show when he gets to a higher level, his odds of playing in the bigs aren't good. He'll still get his chances.

From that same report though:
Aristides Aquino had himself a weekend of all weekends. From Friday night through Sunday he went 9-15 with a double, walk, four home runs, seven runs scored and 12 RBI. He hit three home runs to left field and one to center. After the weekend came to a close, he is third in the league in doubles (one behind the leaders, which includes teammate Brian O’Grady) and leads the league in home runs with nine. He is also second in the league in slugging with a .633 mark. He also has five steals in six attempts. As I noted above, I didn’t want to get much into hitters because of how the camera angle is for hitters, but he was worth talking about for a minute with how his weekend, and season have gone. One scouting note that I was able to get on him from the series was that he can get down the line. He turned in a few above-average times out of the box.
