will pay 6.5 million in buy outs.
Source: #Reds declined $9M team option on Ryan Ludwick, will pay him $4.5M buyout. Sources: #Reds decline $4M option on Jack Hannahan, pay him $2M buyout.

I wonder what those two guys do next. I doubt they'll retire.

I wonder what those two guys do next. I doubt they'll retire. Unless they are willing to take on a minor league contract or play for the minimum there only options could be playing over seas or retirement.

Someone might give Ludwick a one-year big league deal (including the Reds) for a million or so.
Hanahan will likely get a minor league or best case an Article XX-B deal.

Combined with Soto's outright assignment earlier, the Reds are now have the three roster spots they'll need to reactivate Bailey, SMarshall, and Votto.

VT are we talking about the same Ludwick and Hannahan that Fanman declared over and over this past season that both players options WOULD BE PICKED UP?

See schellis' post. They both stink, and neither is likely to get a ML contract. They'll likely either retire or sign a minor league deal with an invitation to ST. VT are we talking about the same Ludwick and Hannahan that Fanman declared over and over this past season that both players options WOULD BE PICKED UP? That was conditional on them recovering from their injuries. Hannahan never did (limiting him exclusively to 1b and the worst offensive season of his career), and chances of Ludwick's option being picked up vanished with their midseason collapse. Ramon Santiago and Kristopher Negron's promising (albeit drastically overrated) seasons provided a lot more help to the 2014 bench than anybody expected of them, eliminating any possible appeal of retaining Hannahan. Having alternative candidates emerge for Hannahan's role was almost as harmful to the chance of his option ($2m more than his buyout) being picked up as his own poor performance. Teams sometimes pay bad players merely because they're the only candidate available. Remember that at the All Star Break, despite all the complaining, the Reds were only a few games out of first place. In the first half Ludwick hit .270 with a .329 OBP, with a reputation (based on 2012, when he hit .309 with a .379 OBP and .581 slugging in the second half) for being a late starter who hits better in the second half. In the second half of 2014 Ludwick's BABIP was 95 points (!) lower, his average was 72 points lower, and OBP was 57 points lower, as he hit .198 with a .272 OBP. If Ludwick kept up (or improved upon) his first half production the decision would have been far more complicated. His total collapse in the second half of 2014, along with the Reds' overall collapse and need for somebody to blame, led to this obvious outcome. If Ludwick hit .270 with a .330 OBP in the second half (matching his first half numbers) and the Reds reached the playoffs I think they would have likely picked up his option, for $4.5m (or $9m from critics who ignore the buyout money for the purpose of trashing the Reds player). If he matched his second half 2012 numbers they certainly would have. The fate of Ludwick's option was not clear (except to die-hard Ludwick haters who refuse to accept the facts of how Ludwick hit in the first half of 2014, and would've wanted his option declined even if he hit .300) until after the All Star Break. Can the Reds acquire a LF capable of hitting .270 with a .330 OBP (Ludwick's first half numbers) for less than $4.5m? We'll see.

I suspect Jack Hannahan will sign a minor league contract, but who knows. I think much of it depends on whether his shoulder recovers to the point at which he can play 3b. If not he's probably likely to retire, as good fielding at 3b was a large driver of his appeal. If his shoulder doesn't recover he'll probably retire, as no team would want him to play 1b.
I think Ryan Ludwick is pretty sure to get an invitation to MLB spring training somewhere, it's just a question of where. I think he'll end up with a cheap but incentive laden MLB contract. I think he'll do better than a minor league contract, and he seems pretty certain to get another opportunity in MLB, if he wants one. Despite hatred for Ryan Ludwick in Reds country - largely for the sin of accepting a contract extension after having a good year (how dare that selfish bastard, if someone offers money you better turn it down!) - finding competent hitters can be tough. Ludwick is clearly a risk, but he's shown on multiple occasions the ability to hit for a respectable average and OBP for at least half a season, even with his power gone. I think at least 1 of the 30 teams will give him a chance.
They just won't pay him $4.5m (or $9m) to do so. He'd also probably be a positive veteran influence on a young team. Maybe a team with a young LF prospect, like Jesse Winker, who probably needs a few months in the minors, will look to bring in Ludwick as a spot holder. If the Reds' efforts to trade for a LF fail, and the Reds are unsuccessful on recruiting from the weak LF free agent market, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ludwick return to the Reds for $500,000, until Winker is ready. Such an agreement would retain Ludwick but save $4m.
