I guess the Reds owe Kevin Towers for helping with the Shin-Soo Choo trade. Only Towers knew that Didi Gregorius was the next Derek Jeter, and valued him accordingly. Hopefully Towers can stay out of the way like Bavasi. How many Reds fans even know Bavasi is in the Reds' front office? Not many, I'd wager.
Bob Miller, the assistant GM who left previously, supposedly did lots of the negotiations for salary arbitration and stuff. Maybe that's what Kevin Towers' role will be, we don't know yet. No evidence yet that he'd be making big decisions of who to acquire.
Keep in mind that after firing Kevin Towers as GM the DBacks still made an uncommon effort to keep him in the organization, presumably in a scouting or advisory role. Even the team that fired him didn't have the typical dedication to wanting him gone. If he can help Jocketty, perhaps with identifying some promising bullpen arms, great.

If I'm not mistaken, Cam Bonifay is also in the front office. When is Ruben Amaro, Jr. going to join them?

Well, on the plus side, people who aren't qualified for the GM job might be very well qualified for a lesser position. At the same time, it's somewhat disappointing that we aren't look for new blood, rather than retreads.

Regardless of field, when we stop thinking that people can learn from their experience and contribute in different roles, much of the employment landscape turns into flotsam and jetsam. It's not experience, it's just tire wear. Depressing...

It's not experience, it's just tire wear. Depressing... Yeah, I'd be more comfortable with adding Kevin Towers than I was with adding Bill Bavasi. Towers flashed some ability during his GM tenures. Bavasi was terrible with the Mariners and it feels like nepotism is largely responsible for his career. But, I'm sure slotting each into their proper role would allow them to contribute positively.

I think we are past the days of using retreads on the field. Those days went out with Jim Bowden. Unless Jimmy Haynes and Steve Avery walk through that door, I think we've made enough player development strides to avoid the hell of veteran retreads.

The Reds bring in guys who were ran out of town for being mediocre to terrible. It's an epidemic that will continue with free agency.
