Signed for 2015: 1B Marquez Smith (re-signed minor league contract), 2B/SS Ivan De Jesus Jr. (minor league contract), 1B Josh Satin (minor league contract), C Kyle Skipworth (minor league contract)
---Marquez Smith has spent the past 2 seasons with the Reds, spending most of it in high A. He absolutely killed it last year (.311 - .424 - .601) but keep in mind he was playing in his age 29 season in a league where the average was just under 23 years of age. Originally drafted by the Cubs in the 8th round of the 2007 draft out of Clemson University (he was drafted four times). He'll turn 30 in March.
---Ivan De Jesus Jr. was considered by many to be one of the top minor league free agents this winter. He's seen recent action in 48 major league games and by all accounts meets the definition of a AAAA ballplayer. He's amassed a .300 - .360 - .416 line over the past 5 years in AAA (2,117 PA's) with LAD/BOS/PIT/BAL. The loss of Elmore was more than enough fuel to sign De Jesus who is a solid insurance plan for the Reds. He was originally drafted in the 2nd round of the 2005 draft by the Dodgers, as a highschool senior out of Puerto Rico. He'll turn 28 in May.
---Josh Satin is also by definition a AAAA ballplayer, he'll replace Neftali Soto on the AAA roster. He's seen action in 116 major league games, all with the Mets over the past 4 seasons, and has slashed a respectable .243 - .346 - .351 line in those games. He's best suited to man 1B, but can also play 3B and some 2B in a pinch. A .394 OBP in over 300 AAA games is nice to see if you are a Louisville Bats fan. He was originally drafted by the Mets in the 6th round of the 2008 draft out of the University of California, Berkeley. He'll turn 30 next month.
----Kyle Skipworth was at one time ranked the 85th best prospect in the minor leagues by Baseball America, he has one major league game under his belt. His bat has never developed - hitting just .215 - .279 - .383 in nearly 600 minor league games, and his defense is average at best, but he's played 2 or 3 years younger than his competition in every level he's ever been at. Replacing Corky Miller in the eyes of some Reds fans may be a tall order but if anyone can do it, Skipworth can. Kyle was originally drafted by the Marlins with the 6th overall pick in the 1st round of the 2008 draft by the Marlins, as a highschool senior out of California. He won't turn 25 until this coming March.
***At least we know that Jocketty's office is still open.
