The affiliation shuffle kicked off yesterday, Sept. 16 and begins a two-week period when clubs can negotiate agreements with unattached affiliates. Consider it free agency for minor league teams.
Teams had until Sept. 11 to extend deals with their current affiliate or notify their central offices that they will pursue a new affiliation.
A total of 23 minor league teams will explore a new affiliation when the two-week open period of the affiliation shuffle begins tomorrow, according to a source familiar with the process. Those teams are as follows (with current major league affiliate listed in parenthesis):
TRIPLE-A (6): PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE: Albuquerque Isotopes (Dodgers), Colorado Springs (Rockies), Fresno Grizzlies (Giants), Nashville Sounds (Brewers), Oklahoma City RedHawks (Astros), Sacramento River Cats (Athletics).
DOUBLE-A (4): EASTERN LEAGUE: New Britain Rock Cats (Twins). SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Chattanooga Lookouts (Dodgers), Mobile BayBears (Diamondbacks). TEXAS LEAGUE: Tulsa Drillers (Texas).
HIGH CLASS A (6): CALIFORNIA LEAGUE: Bakersfield Blaze (Reds), High Desert Mavericks (Mariners). CAROLINA LEAGUE: Carolina Mudcats (Indians), Lynchburg Hillcats (Braves), Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Rangers). FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE: Daytona Cubs (Cubs).
LOW CLASS A (4): MIDWEST LEAGUE: Beloit Snappers (Athletics), Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres), Kane County Cougars (Cubs), South Bend Silver Hawks (Diamondbacks).
SHORT-SEASON (3): NORTHWEST LEAGUE: Boise Hawks (Cubs), Eugene Emeralds (Padres), Tri-City Dust Devils (Rockies).

The Cubs have agreed to a PDC with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
So there goes one option for the Reds.

If they could enter into an agreement for several seasons with either Lynchburg, Carolina or Daytona at the very least geographically it would be an improvement. Getting out of Bakersfield should be priority one though, even if it means staying in the Cal league.

Now that Myrtle Beach is gone, I hope they can go back to Zebulon.

Carolina Mudcats of Zebulon, North Carolina... it just has a nice ring to it. If I wrote science fiction I'd name a planet Zebulon.
Bakersfield Blaze in Bakersfield? High Desert Mavericks in Adelanto, CA? Lynchburg Hillcats... lynching? Ugh. I want Zebulon!

It would appear that the Cubs know their fan base well and how to appeal to them. By linking up with Myrtle Beach they now have minor league affiliates in two extreme tourist-trap "redneck-ish" southern communities(along with the Tennessee Smokies of Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg). I suppose they know that next to drinking really cheap beer in the bleachers at Wrigley there isn't much better than taking in a show at Dollywood, the Ripley's museums with the two headed chickens, bad overcrowded beaches and taking in a game of Cubs prospects.

Single A Dayton and A+ Daytona would be pretty confusing.
Player so and so promoted from Dayton to Daytona. The extra A shows how advanced advanced A-ball is.

If Marge Schott were still alive and in charge you can bet she'd see the wisdom in Daytona. Just add the letter A to the uniforms when the guys get promoted from Dayton and viola! Major money savings!

---The Braves, Reds, Mariners and Rangers have to choose between Daytona, Carolina, High Desert, and Bakersfield for next year's A+ affiliates.

Major money savings! Daytona has just spent a butt load of money upgrading their facilities but the Cubs got out because they lead the country in rain outs pretty much every year.

Reds, Triple-A Louisville Agree to 2-year Extension
Original Player Development Contract with Affiliate Was to End after 2016 Season
Mark Sheldon, MLB.com, 2/4/2015
CINCINNATI -- The Reds and Triple-A Louisville announced on Wednesday that they agreed to a two-year extension of their player development contract. The original affiliate agreement was to end following the 2016 season.
Louisville and the Reds have been partnered since the 2000 season. The Bats play their games at Louisville Slugger Field in the city's downtown.
"Since 2000 we have had a great relationship with the Bats and their front office, and we are pleased to be able to extend our PDC with them," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said in a statement. "Our players tell us they enjoy living and playing in Louisville because the front office staff, ballpark and fan base are some of the best in the Minor Leagues."
Located about 90 minutes south of Cincinnati and Great American Ball Park, Louisville has been the last rung of development for many of the team's current stars, including Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Homer Bailey, Todd Frazier, Devin Mesoraco and Billy Hamilton.
